Yesterday, Xiaomi announced their latest flagship phone, abandoned the Mi naming scheme and only supports numbers.
Three phones were released, the standard version of Mi 12, then the 12 Pro and 12x.
We already know quite a lot of details Mi 12, Including its new smaller form factor, but it is the new Pro model, which will arouse most people’s interest.
Although both phones are equipped with new flagships Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1, There are significant differences between them, beyond dimensions.
Mi 12 Pro LPTO AMOLED display
The Mi 12 Pro will be equipped with a 6.73-inch display with a resolution of 3200×1440, a 120Hz LPTO AMOLED, and a brightness of 1500 bits. Interestingly, this is smaller than last year’s Mi 11 Pro, with a lower screen-to-body ratio; maybe Xiaomi finally realizes that people don’t want huge phones?
LPTO technology means that the refresh rate can vary between 1-120Hz, depending on the task at hand. For most people, this is better than a static refresh rate, but many people report that this can cause eye fatigue due to changes in the refresh rate.
Camera sensor: 50MP Sony IMX707 vs Samsung JN1
Especially interesting is the camera specification, which continues the mobile phone company’s trend of defining camera technology as a flagship phone.
Each lens of the Mi 12 Pro uses three 50MP cameras.
The main camera is the Sony IMX707, which is theoretically not as good as the Samsung GN2 on the Mi 11 Pro because of its smaller sensor, 1/1.28″ vs 1/1.12″. However, Sony sensors have traditionally been superior to similar products from Samsung.
Then the ultra-wide-angle lens and the 2x telephoto lens both use 50MP sensors, but it is not clear what these sensors are. I can’t read Chinese, but the super wide-angle and telephoto pixel bins of the main sensor are 1.28 µm vs 2.44 µm, so the sensor size of these two cameras is smaller.
My best guess is that the secondary and tertiary cameras use the Samsung JN1 image sensor, which was launched in June 2021 and is the industry’s first 0.64 micron (μm) pixel image sensor. This 50MP sensor combines four adjacent 0.64μm pixels into one large 1.28μm pixel, which increases the sensitivity by four times, resulting in brighter 12.5Mp photos.
In contrast, Oppo Find X3 Pro is one of the first mobile phones to match the camera sensor of the main lens with the ultra-wide-angle lens, and both use the Sony IMX 766.
Battery and charging
Xiaomi continues to be at the forefront of charging technology. Mi 12 Pro will be equipped with 120W wired charging, which can be charged from flat to full in 18 minutes. Then it has a 50W wireless charging function and can be fully charged in 42 minutes.
The battery is a bit smaller than the 4600 mAh I wanted, but slightly larger than last year.
Will Mi 12 Pro be launched in the UK or the EU? What about Mi 12 Ultra?
Last year, Mi 11 Pro was not launched in the UK or EU. We can choose Mi 11 or Mi 11 Ultra.
With the size of Mi 12 being much smaller, I can’t see Xiaomi launching only a small phone in the Western market. It’s crazy not to launch a full-size Mi 12 Pro.
As for the Mi 12 Ultra, this is still unknown. Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra will not be released until March 2021, and will not be available in the UK until May.
Pricing and availability-when will it be launched in the UK?
The Mi 12 series is currently only launched in China, and the global launch will be launched at a later date.
In 2021, Xiaomi MI 11 will be launched in the EU in early February and in the UK in mid-March.
As for the pricing, Xiaomi Mi 12 Pro starts at 8/128GB, retail price is 4699 yuan (550 pounds / 738 US dollars), 8/256GB model is 4999 yuan (585 pounds / 785 US dollars), and the top specification 12/ The 256GB model costs RMB 5,399 (£630/US$848).

For British buyers, the Mi 12 series lacks the 20 frequency band, which is a very common 800MHz frequency band and is often used to cover more rural areas.
