information – If you want phone makers to offer smaller phones again, vote on the online petition.

Not every phone user needs a glass surfboard in their pocket. Some smartphone users want the “phablet” phase to end. The founders of The Pebble Watch are in this camp and are championing efforts to change the minds of manufacturers.

Eric Mijkowski, Founder Pebble watch“the most funded Kickstarter project in history” (Wikipedia), is a big shot, but prefers smaller phones for a range of reasons you can guess; one-handed ease, lighter weight devices, pocket escapes and dropouts less chance of falling.

Eric has drawn up a manifesto and petition that you can sign if you agree. You can choose from different levels of “voting”. I checked “yes, but the price is too high.” The manifesto calls for a $700-800 price point, and if that’s the case, that doesn’t motivate me to buy. But I support the concept and would like to see phone makers at least repurpose iPhone Mini-sized devices as an option for those who want them.

The list of specs in the manifesto is controversial, but it provides a starting point for reflection and discussion. I can use less than the recommended 8GB of RAM, specific processors recommended and other points. But I’m now a proponent of the idea and hope phone makers take notice and take action.
