The Stax brand is a legendary Japanese brand that produced a variety of audio products from 1960 to 1995. It was then restructured into STAX after bankruptcy and has continued to produce electrostatic headphones ever since. Electrostatic headphones require their own dedicated headphone amplifier; therefore, the minimum investment for the current STAX line is $2,594, but can go as high as $12,000.
Edifier acquired the brand back in 2011 and now they are launching a new consumer friendly product under STAX Spirit at a more affordable price.
As you might expect, the Edifier STAX Spirit S3 aren’t electrostatic headphones, but they still use advanced technology compared to most headphones.
The STAX Spirit S3 are Bluetooth planar headphones that combine the benefits of dynamic and balanced armature drivers for extremely detailed low frequency and clearer, more consistent high frequency performance.
The S3 combines Snapdragon audio technology, three patented planar driver solutions, high-resolution audio technology and innovative acoustically friendly materials to deliver a truly memorable, lossless and low distortion audio experience.
With a total weight of around 329 grams, the S3 is also significantly lighter than traditional flat headphones and has a carbon fiber shell to ensure a comfortable fit and extended durability. The headset adopts the latest wireless technology and is equipped with the latest Bluetooth 5.2, which is faster, more reliable, and multi-connected (users can connect two devices at the same time). Finally, the high-capacity lithium battery provides up to 80 hours of battery life – ensuring you won’t experience any unexpected interruptions while you’re on the couch in your living room or upright in your home studio.
Combining the spirit and dedication of legendary audio pioneer STAX with the high-performance innovations of Edifier, the S3 and STAX Spirit series provide a new generation of sound lovers with an unparalleled audio experience.
The Edifier STAX Spirit S3 is currently priced at $400 at Edifier and £400 in the UK.
They’re one of the only Bluetooth flat headphones on the market, and the only other options are the Drop + THX Panda Planar closed-back headphones and the $800 HIFIMAN Ananda-BT open-back headphones.
