Post-flood reconstruction: artisans are needed in flooded areas

NIn the flooded areas of North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate, not all damage is visible. However, many people have realized that reconstruction takes a long time and needs a lot of help. But where do the craftsmen and construction companies that need it come from, who is busy with previous orders, and who complains about the lack of materials? The desire to help can often be felt-also on construction sites. The main German construction industry association (HDB) announced that quick assistance is a top priority and must be implemented quickly. Last week, the regional associations questioned their member companies and relayed possible assistance to their respective municipalities.

Reinhard Quast, Chairman of the Central Association of the German Construction Industry (ZDH), the first task is to build shelters for people whose houses and apartments cannot live, and to free up roads and bridges for rescue transportation and rescue vehicles. “Under the current emergency situation, construction companies in various regions are ready to receive emergency crisis assistance and are doing their best to establish temporary infrastructure to carry out further rescue and rescue work in areas destroyed by floods,” he said. The construction industry provides equipment, machinery and building materials, which, according to Quast, can also be used for reconstruction and renovation.

The toilet and phone are broken

Clean-up work will be carried out before reconstruction. City Councillor Norbert Portz of the Town and Municipal Association personally went to Ahrweiler over the weekend to help friends and cleared buckets of dirt from the apartment. The first problem he saw was the frequent lack of basic water and electricity supplies. The toilet, telephone and refrigerator are all broken. “The Bundeswehr and THW must also quickly ensure the basic supply of the people here,” he said of this special situation. “By the way, in an already overloaded market, there are not enough merchants.”

Many of them are run by themselves. There are people who can make craftsmen at home, or someone who knows them personally, both have advantages. But there are almost no skilled workers on site. Therefore, they will have to travel long distances to places affected by the disaster, which may increase costs. “We must now bring together artisans from all over the world through coordinated activities,” Portz asked.

Local businesses have also suffered. Hans Peter Wollseifer, chairman of the Central Association of German Craftsmen (ZDH), talked about the flood disaster that destroyed the existence of many handicraft enterprises overnight, or permanently put them into question. They are currently trying to help you. He saw that many construction companies from nearby and remote areas are ready to carry out the necessary renovation and reconstruction work: “It turns out that the current large-scale procurement of construction materials and prices are an obstacle.” Wollseifer talked about flexible solutions at the municipal level. : The current price risk of building materials should not be unilaterally borne by the construction company. In addition, in this special case, the craftsman president is pushing for emergency rewards. Reconstruction procedures should also be streamlined. He also believes that this is critical to the future viability of the German economy.
