I traveled over six hours from Indore to Madei on a winter afternoon in December. However, the closest airport to Satpura National Park is in Bhopal. Naturalist Neetu and manager Kshitij greeted me with warm smiles and handed me a steel water bottle as a souvenir. As we wandered the cobbled lanes lined with lanterns, Neetu became an example of how the resort is committed to contributing to sustainable development in every way it can.

Food at Denwa Backwater Escape
The main building where the restaurant is located is the heart of Denwa Backwater Escape. Over the next few days, I ate all my meals at the on-site restaurant located on the top floor of the facility. Over the next few days, I let my taste buds swirl through the restaurant’s authentic flavors, from Malwa Thali to Madhai Adivasi Thali to Burmese Khow Suey.

Dishes at Malwa Thali include Aloo Chokha, Sev Tamatar ki Sabji, Indrahar Kadhi and Moong Dal Badi Chaat. Dal-Bati-Churma, steamed rice and toppings like papad, achar (kimchi) and Lehsun (garlic) chutney are at the centre. Desserts include homemade Paan ice cream and Nariyal Chana Bati.

Madhai Adivasi Thali comes in many flavors! Thali includes Singhara Salad, Mahua Leaf Smoked Fish with Earthy Flavors, Smoked Paneer, Pan Bada Curry, Gilki Chokha, Suki Bhaji, Kadam ki Chutney, Adiwasi Dal, and Papaya, Kimchi, Bajra roti, and Raw Rice Installation Kikkad roti. I wolfed down the handmade Anjeer ice cream and Bajra Gud Halwa for dessert.

Pad Burmese consists of boiled noodles, gravy, chicken wings, chilli oil, hard-boiled eggs, peanuts and fried onions, and a slice of lemon. Eat this and mix everything up before diving in. The side dishes are great. I was also attracted by the desserts, especially the ghewar with galadi and chocolate ice cream. I cherish the BBQ dinner we had by the pool the other night. On the side, a jungle tea cocktail was served! It’s delicious and toasty, and it’s the perfect drink to keep me warm on cold nights because it has tea and rum in it.

sunset boat ride
Denwa Backwater Escape started their boat trip the day I checked in. As it turned out, I was one of the first tourists to board a sailboat around Tawa Reservoir. We sail to a nearby checkpoint, pick up our guide, and continue our voyage deep into Satpura’s fantastic riverscape, which is always changing.
There are so many things to juggle! The tranquility, the diversity of flora and fauna, and the magnificence of the Blue Satin River! During the two hour boat ride, I saw hornbills, parrots, swamp crocodiles and more. As we continued up the river the sun started to set and I have to say it was one of the most amazing sunsets I have ever seen.
