One of Afghanistan’s first female mayors said she hid in a car pit to avoid the Taliban while trying to escape to Kabul Airport.
Zarifa Gafari Tell BBC Taliban militants came to her home after the organization regained control of the country and beat her security guard.
She said that on August 18-three days after the Taliban occupied Kabul-she and her family drove to the city’s airport, where she hid in a foothole, avoiding every time the vehicle passed the Taliban checkpoint.
“When we arrived at the airport gate, there were Taliban fighters everywhere,” she said. “I have been trying to hide myself.”
