Brunswick-On Thursday, the jury watched a video of Ahmad Arbery walking around a vacant property during an earlier visit to a mostly white community in southern Georgia. There, this A black man was hunted down and shot by three white men on trial for murder.
The videos were taken from surveillance cameras installed in a vacant, semi-constructed house in Satilla Shores, which played a vital role in this case. Abery visited the site several times in the evenings a few months before his death, and the last visit occurred a few minutes before he was shot.
“I encountered an intruder,” the owner Larry Inglich called the police after the first recorded interview on the evening of October 25, 2019, which took place at the Green County High Court on Thursday.
Gregory McMichael, 65; his son Travis McMichael, 35; and their neighbor William “Rody” Bryan, 52, pleaded not guilty to murder, severe assault and illegal imprisonment. If convicted of murder, they will face life imprisonment.
Visits to uninhabited property have become a core part of the debate.
The McMichaels said they were aware of reports that an unidentified black man was wandering around the property, and Travis McMichael even caught a glimpse of Abery during a visit earlier in February.
“Looting” property
They think that Arbery may be the same person when he ran through the McMichaels lane in Satilla Shores on February 23, 2020. The prosecutor said that Arbery was an avid jogging fan on Sunday afternoon.
These people chased Abery in a pickup truck, then young McMichael pointed a shotgun at Abery, and Abery ran towards him and reached for a weapon. Their lawyer said it was justified self-defense.
In a video testimony recorded and played to the jury in September, English said that he had been slowly building his riverside house in Satilla Shores.
“My dream is to have a place on the water,” he said. He knew that local children would sometimes hang out in houses without fences. He testified that he was worried about people having accidents near the dock, so he installed surveillance cameras and sent videos to his mobile phone.
It shows footage of Abery walking around the pier during his visit in October 2019, as well as a recording of a British person calling the police to report an intrusion of a “colored person” with tattoos and curly hair on his arm. English told the police that the man might have been drunk or drugged while “looting” the property.
In the testimony, English said that he quickly decided that the person was more likely not to be drunk, but to move carefully in the dark, which looked strange in the night vision video.
Drink water from the tap
Nothing was taken away that night, English said. A clip from November was also played, showing a man and a woman, both white, wandering the property at night, and a phone call to the police in English was also played.
The videos of three other night visits conducted by Arbery in November, December, and February were played. Some of the fishing equipment and coolers on one of the Englishmen’s boats were lost at some point, but nothing was taken away during the days when they appeared in Abery, the Englishman said.
English showed Arbery footage to some of his neighbors. McMichaels said they were aware of reports that when Arbery ran across their driveway on February 23, 2020, an unknown black man wandered around the British property.

English says that he sometimes chats with McMichaels friendly, and that he has never seen or talked to Bryan.
He said he only asked a neighbor to take care of his property, not any defendant. He later heard that Travis McMichael had joined the neighbor and called 911 while visiting Arbery on the evening of February 11, 2020, to report that the property had an unfamiliar black man.
Inglich also stated through his lawyer that he later concluded that Abery had been drinking from the tap at his home, which was not within the field of view of any surveillance cameras.
