Review – Earlier this year, I bought a new camera for my photography hobby, which uses a CFexpress card as the main storage. I have been using a Type-C cable to connect the camera to the computer while waiting for the CFexpress reader to review it. Alxum CFexpress reader reviews offer to answer my stingy way.

What is it?

The Alxum CFexpress card reader is a USB 3.1 Gen 2 10Gbps USB C to CFexpress Type B memory card adapter.

What’s in the box?

  • Alxum CFexpress card reader
  • 1 foot USB-A to C cable
  • 1 foot Type C to Type C cable
  • User manual

Hardware specifications

  • USB 3.1 Gen 2 10 Gbps, backward compatible with USB 3.1 Gen 1, USB 3.0, etc.
  • Compatible with macOS 10.10 and higher, Windows XP and higher, iPad Pro, Linux, laptop, PC, Chrome OS and other USB C devices.

Design and features

The Alxum CFexpress card reader is a simple device that can do one thing and do it well. It only supports CFexpress Type B cards with a capacity of up to 2TB.

The aluminum alloy metal shell has a lovely satin finish, which will not show fingerprints like some smooth surfaces. There is an LED indicator on the top, which is not very obvious. I have found that some devices with LED indicators are too bright and seem to always distract you from your peripheral vision. The LED has three status modes: white when connected to power, flashing when transmitting data, and flashing once every three seconds when in sleep mode.

The rated data transfer speed of 10Gbps largely depends on the capabilities of the Type C port, the speed of the target drive, and the overall ability of the computer to transfer data. For Type C connections, I found that using CrystalDiskMark, the best transfer speed on my laptop is 424.7 MB/s (3.3976 Gbps). I also found that the transfer speed through my USB 3.1 port is almost the same.

The slot of the CFexpress Type B memory card has a latch mechanism that I like. Positive click feedback helps indicate that the card has been inserted correctly.

The Alxum CFexpress card reader is designed for photographers and videographers. The reader is plug and play without any driver request.

what do I like

  • metal shell
  • Type C connection

Final thoughts

The Alxum CFexpress card reader has provided perfect operation for the past 30 days, just doing what it should do and doing it well.
