A kind Tokyo The court sentenced American Special Forces veteran Michael Taylor to two years in prison. His son Peter’s term of office is one year and eight months.
“This case allowed Ghosn, a felony defendant, to escape overseas,” said Chief Justice Hideo Hirui. “A year and a half have passed, but there is no possibility of a court session.”
The two were accused of smuggling Mr. Ghosn from Japan to Lebanon in December 2019.
The court learned that Mr. Ghosn was hiding in a box that was taken on a private jet and managed to bypass the authorities at Kansai Airport.
They were accused of plotting to escape and were awarded £950,000.
Mr. Taylor and his son apologized to the court in tears last month, saying they regretted their role in the escape conspiracy.
Mr. Ghosn was first arrested for financial misconduct in November 2018 on suspicion of misuse of company funds (which he denies) and was taken to a detention center, where he was held in a cell.
He is now an international fugitive from Lebanon, and Lebanon has no extradition treaty with Japan.
U.S. prosecutors described his escape as “one of the most shameless and carefully planned escapes in modern history.”
He said: “The plane was originally scheduled to take off at 11pm. The 30 minutes waiting for takeoff in the cabin on the plane may be the longest wait I have ever experienced in my life.”
He added that in general, he will stay in the box for about 90 minutes.
