Arsenal have completed the signing of Benfica’s left-back Nuno Tavares, and the deal may ultimately be worth £8.5 million.
The Gunners announced Saturday morning that Tavares had signed a long-term contract with the club.
After departing from Portugal and completing the current isolation regulations for international entry into the UK, Tavares will meet his new teammates in the next few days. He will wear the No. 20 jersey.
Arsenal coach Arteta said: “We welcome Nuno to join the club. He is a promising young player. He has developed very well in the Benfica team in recent seasons, and he has become a member of Portugal’s under-21 youth team. Show your strength.
“The arrival of Nuno will provide the team with extra strength and defensive options, especially this energy on the left side of the court.
“We are looking forward to Nuno’s arrival, looking forward to his integration into the Arsenal family and playing in front of our outstanding supporters.”
Arsenal’s technical director Edu said: “Nuno is a talented young player and many clubs in Europe want him.
“He will provide a strong substitute at the left-back position. We look forward to him growing and developing with us and becoming an important member of the first team.”
