Ingredients and Substitutes
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for grilled bacon chicken, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
- chicken breast – I prefer to use boneless skinless chicken breasts, but you can use chicken thighs for a dark meat option (baking times may vary).you can also let Bacon Wrapped Chicken Tenders.
- olive oil – Helps keep seasoning on chicken. Substitute any neutral cooking oil of your choice, such as avocado oil, if desired.
- seasoning – include smoked paprika, garlic powder, sea saltand Black pepper。 These simple spices are the best all-purpose seasoning for bacon-wrapped chicken.
- bacon – Make sure to use regular sliced bacon, not thick cut bacon, as thick cuts take a long time to crisp. If you don’t have bacon on hand, Chicken Wrapped in Prosciutto is a similarly tasty substitute.
- Maple sugar – Maple syrup is optional but will give the bacon a slightly sweet caramel flavor.I use Sugar-Free Maple Syrup, but you can use regular expressions or omit them entirely. You can also substitute brown sugar if it suits your lifestyle; I don’t eat refined sugar so use natural Besti Brown Sugar Substitute when I want this option.
How to Make Bacon Wrapped Chicken
This section shows how to bake bacon chicken, with step-by-step photos and technical details to help you visualize the process. For full instructions, including amounts and temperatures, see recipe card below.
- Prepare. Preheat oven. Prepare an oven-safe rack to fit on a rimmed baking sheet (This set is perfect!) Line a baking sheet with foil and place a rack on top.
- dry. put the chicken breast in a cutting board。 Pat dry with paper towels.
- season. Lightly brush both sides of the chicken with olive oil. Season both sides with smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- wrap. Starting at one end of the chicken breast, wrap a slice of bacon around it, trying not to overlap (see tip below). Add a second slice (or even a third if your chicken breasts are large) to cover most of the chicken in the bacon. Put it on a shelf. Repeat for other chicken breasts.
- brush. Brush maple syrup over bacon, if desired.
- chef. Bacon-wrapped chicken breasts baked in the oven.
- rest. Remove chicken from oven. Loosely wrap the pan with foil and let it rest before serving. I like to sprinkle it with a little fresh parsley.
Tips for the Best Bacon Wrapped Chicken
If you want to make the best bacon-wrapped chicken breasts, these tips will help:
- dry the chicken. Make sure the chicken is dry before seasoning and wrapping the bacon. This helps lock in the moisture in the chicken.
- if you have time. I don’t do this for the time, as wrapping the chicken in bacon helps lock in the moisture, but for extra juicy chicken, brine it first like I do in mine Grilled Chicken Breast Recipe.
- Avoid stretching the bacon. Make sure to tuck the ends of the bacon underneath and avoid stretching the bacon so it doesn’t fall apart during cooking.
- Use toothpicks if necessary. If you can’t get the bacon under, use a toothpick to secure.
- Use more bacon as needed. Regular Chicken Breasts (8 oz.) You will need about 2 slices of bacon per chicken breast. If yours is bigger, you may need to use 3. The chicken should be almost completely covered, as shown.
- Bake on a rack. You can make bacon-wrapped chicken breasts in a sheet pan, but I highly recommend this grill pan with a rack。 It allows for extra air flow and doesn’t leave the chicken in the bacon grease so the bacon gets crispy on all sides. (You can even save the bacon grease on the bottom of the pan.)
- Do not overcook. use one meat thermometer Check for completion. A safe internal temperature for chicken is 165 degrees Fahrenheit, but I like to remove the bacon-wrapped chicken breasts a few degrees before that (163 degrees Fahrenheit) because the temperature will rise a few degrees while resting.
- Rest is important. Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before slicing to allow the juices to settle and keep the inside of the chicken moist.
storage instructions
- shop: Wrap leftovers tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for up to 3-5 days.
- meal prep: Season and wrap chicken breasts before baking and store in the refrigerator. When ready, simply bake as usual.
- Reheat: For a fresh crisp, reheat bacon-wrapped oven-baked chicken breasts in the oven or Air fryer, at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Because of the bacon wrapping, the microwave won’t dry it out, but I don’t recommend it because the bacon is no longer crispy.
- freeze: You can freeze bacon-wrapped chicken either before or after baking. Place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Freeze for about 1 hour, or until bacon is firm. Then, transfer to a freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw the chicken in the refrigerator overnight before cooking or reheating as usual. (I don’t recommend reheating from frozen as it may dry out.
