Beginner Pickleball Tips | Jess Ann Kirby

Pickleball has become popular in the United States and has become one of the most popular sports in the United States. What was once considered a “old man’s game” is now hugely popular with players of all ages. In fact, pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States. What people love about Pickleball is how easy it is to play with a group of friends. You do not need to have special skills or athletic ability to participate. It’s a great way to build a community and socialize with friends. I like to think of pickleball as a combination of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It’s competitive but very low stakes, fun and easygoing. It doesn’t require a lot of cardio and can be played casually among friends.

Have you ever wondered what the pickle ball hype is all about? Learning a new sport can be a fun, exciting and sometimes overwhelming experience. Pickleball is fairly easy to learn, but there are a lot of rules, tricks, and strategies to understand. Today, we share some pickleball tips for beginners. You’ll get the hang of it in no time!

Beginner Pickleball Tips

keep it simple

Pickleball paddle and ball

When you’re first learning to play pickleball, keep it simple. Hit the ball and get used to the pickleball paddle and ball. If you play tennis, you need to get used to the feeling of both. A pickleball racket is smaller than a tennis racket, but larger than a table tennis racket. A pickleball is similar to a wiffleball, but slightly heavier.

Pickleball

After playing for a while, get familiar with the pickle ball court. A pickleball court is about half the size of an entire tennis court. One tennis court is 36′ x 78′ and one pickleball court is 20′ x 44′. Similar to a tennis ball, there are 4 sections on each side, with a net separating the sides. The upper part of the court closest to the net is the “kitchen”. Once you pass the galley line, you’re in the volley zone. You can play the game with 2-4 pickleball players.

Pickleball Rules

When the game starts, you’ll decide on your team and have everyone move to different corners of the field. The person in right field will start the serve and the ball must cross the no-volley line. The receiver must let the ball bounce once before receiving the serve. The server or partner must then allow the ball to bounce again before returning. Players can now start volleyball and enter the kitchen to play.

Pickleball Scoring

Pickleball scoring can be a bit confusing at first. Servers always say the score in the following order: their team scores, their opponent scores, and they are the server’s number (1 or 2). When you win on serve, you get a point. If you lose a point while serving, the serve will pass to your partner. No one scored. If they win on serve, your team gets a point. If they lose serve and the rotation goes to another team, again no one gets a point.

You can only earn points for service. A team who serves first, who serves first, and whoever serves second. Say you’re on second serve, you get 3 points, the opponent gets 4, your score will be spoken aloud, 3-4-2. The first team to reach 11 points (win 2 points) wins the game. Each game is best two out of three games.

learn from mistakes

Playing pickleball is a lot of fun and shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Especially if you’re just learning, you’re bound to make mistakes. The rules can be a bit confusing and differ from tennis, badminton and table tennis. Give yourself a break and use this opportunity to learn from your mistakes. As a beginner, you’ll be able to get a feel for hitting the ball and begin to learn pickleball techniques to improve your game.

As you get more comfortable with hitting the ball, you may start experimenting with different pickleball strategies, such as the dink. A dink shot is when you hit the ball into the non-volley zone (also known as the galley) on your opponent’s side of the court. The DINK is a ball that is low to the ground and difficult to volley. This prevents your opponent from returning difficult shots to you and gives you time to recover.

Just as you prepare in tennis, you can do the same in pickleball. You want to make sure your feet are hip-width apart and your knees are bent. This will allow you to quickly move from side to side and front to back. You also need to hold your paddle with ease and confidence.

As with all sports, an important tip for pickleball is to stay focused! Be prepared and do your best, and you’ll have a lot of fun.

wear comfortable clothes and shoes

Like any sport, you’ll want to be comfortable and ready for a pickle ball workout. It is important to wear clothing that allows this movement without hindering it. Be sure to wear proper tennis shoes or sneakers to play. This will allow you to move around the court with ease without slipping or tripping. You’ll want something stretchy but not too flowy, as you don’t want it to impede your movements. Wear them with gym shorts, leggings, tennis skirts or dresses, tank tops, and t-shirts. Don’t forget to wear sunglasses or a hat to protect your eyes from the sun. It’s hard to see the ball and serve without goggles.view this article on tennis equipment Get more clothing recommendations.

Stretch before playing

Pickleball requires a lot of rapid forward, backward, side to side movement and twisting movements in various directions. You can run the ball, take a quick step and reach up, down, forward or backward. All of these movements require flexibility in your body. Stretching before exercise is a great way to prevent injury and help prepare your body for these exercises. Try stretching your calves, thighs, shoulders, arms, neck, and twisting your body from side to side.

Invest in quality equipment

As you start playing pickleball more, you may decide that you want to invest in some better equipment. Experienced players may prefer certain pickleball paddles and balls. When shopping for a pickleball racquet, you need to consider weight, grip, and shape. Everyone has different preferences. Some racquets may work better for some people than others. Paddles range in price from $40 to $150, so you can choose one that fits your needs and budget. Check out some options below.
