Best RGB Portable Photography Light: OMBAR Panel Review

This article started as just a review of affordable OMBAR RGB Video Light. However, it’s a relatively simple product and doesn’t have much to write home about. There are many competing products on Amazon, and the defining feature of this product is its affordable price compared to others.

Overview

If you haven’t guessed, this is a small pocket-sized RGB LED light board with 1/4″ threaded holes for mounting on cameras and tripods. It is designed for a wide range of photography applications, such as night photography or product photography.

In my case, it’s mostly used for product shots. I’m not particularly good at photography and lighting is one of the areas I need to improve.I have a light box, big Panel LED light and a large ring light, but they all have their limitations. For the most part, I’m too lazy to set them up every time I need to take a photo.

With these portable lights, they sit on my desk and I can pick it up quickly when I need it.

This comes with a small hot shoe mount to attach to your camera. I mostly use a tripod.

It’s very easy to use. After charging it via USB-C, power it on and you can control the lighting using the buttons on the side.

In the default mode, you can adjust the color temperature from 2500K-8500K. Pressing the up and down buttons will adjust this.

Press the setting button and the setting will switch to Brightness from 0% to 100%.

If you press the power button quickly, it will change modes. This will come from the color temperatures HSV, RGB and FX. HSV and RGB give you fine-grained control over light color, and FX has 12 light modes covering different types of flickering and pulsing.

I can’t find any specs on how bright it actually is, but it’s pretty bright in my opinion. Do not look directly when the brightness is high.

There are many similar products on Amazon. Most are more expensive than that.

this Lume Cube RGB Panel Pro is the top option for £150. It’s Bluetooth-enabled, allowing you to pair it with an app, giving you a greater degree of control.

Lume Cube Panel GO Well-received for £100, it has 112 LEDs and works for 1.5 hours at maximum brightness of 1050 LUX. It has a smaller color temperature range than the panels I’ve reviewed, from 3200K to 5600K.

then the smaller Lume Cube Panel Mini LED just £70

this Godox M1 RGB LED Video Light Priced at £125, the standout feature here is its built-in hinged stand that allows you to prop it up or mount it at different angles. It also has a large 2410mAh battery and 2500k-8500k regulation.

On the cheaper end is Luminfox LED Video Lights. This seems to have a built in diffuser to create a smooth, soft lighting effect. This is almost the same as the OMBAR with 2500-8500K and 4000mAh battery.

this Llano RGB Video Light Similar in design and function to OMBAR, but with a smaller temperature range of 3000K-6500K. However, it does include a tripod, and it comes at an attractive price.

overall

I like many things about the OMBAR RGB video lights. It’s portable, has a wide temperature range, is bright enough for my needs, and has an attractive price point compared to most on the market.

I haven’t used it myself, but I would say that Luminfox is the only other product on the list above that I would seriously consider. The main difference is that diffuse light gives you one solid color, and it also has an analog wheel for control.
