The White House said on Tuesday (July 27) that President Joe Biden had nominated former US ambassador Mark Gittenstein as ambassador to the European Union.
Gittenstein is the US ambassador to Romania in the Obama administration, an international lawyer and a member of the Board of Directors of the Biden Foundation.
He is descended from Romanian Jews because his grandparents were immigrants from Botosani, Romania in the late 19th century.
The US-Romanian ballistic missile defense agreement was signed and negotiated during Gitenstein’s tenure in Bucharest.
According to the White House, Gittenstein served as a member of Biden’s Presidential Transitional Advisory Committee earlier this year and co-chaired Biden’s transition to Vice President in 2008.
He also served in the U.S. Senate for 17 years, holding various positions, including legal counsel to the Intelligence Committee.
