Bob Dylan was sued in a New York court by a woman who said the American rock and folk legend sexually abused her when she was 12 years old about 60 years ago.
The lawsuit filed on Friday alleges that Dylan abused the plaintiff during the six weeks from April to May 1965, and was referred to as JC in court documents.
It stated that Dylan “used his status as a musician to provide JC with alcohol and drugs and sexually abused her on many occasions.”
The lawsuit also accused Dylan, who turned 80 in May of this year, of physically threatening the girl.
The lawsuit alleges that the alleged abuse occurred in an apartment owned by Dylan at the famous Chelsea Hotel in New York.
A spokesperson for Dylan, whose real name is Robert Zimmerman, said that “this 56-year-old statement is untrue and will be vigorously defended.”
The plaintiff, who now lives in Greenwich, Connecticut, said that Dylan caused her “severe psychological and emotional trauma.” She is seeking unspecified damages.
The lawsuit was filed the day before the window for filing claims under the New York State Child Victims Act closed.
The bill allows abuse victims to sue their alleged assailants, regardless of the age of the claim or whether the statute of limitations has passed.
