Official data show that Bulgaria’s death toll in September was more than 50% higher than usual, which made the EU, the least vaccinated country, the worst-hit country during the return of coronavirus cases in the late summer.
According to Eurostat’s report comparing the number of new deaths with pre-pandemic levels, Bulgaria has the highest excess mortality rate in the European Union, followed by Lithuania, Greece and Romania-all exceeding 30%.
The epidemic in Eastern Europe has worsened since September, and the daily number of deaths from the coronavirus in Bulgaria has hit a record high in recent weeks.
According to a report by Statista, as of last week, Bulgaria had only received 44 doses of vaccine for every 100 people-the lowest among all European countries.
It is one of the countries with the highest per capita Covid-19 mortality rate in the world, Romania also has the second lowest vaccination rate in the EU, and the elderly are particularly affected.
Eurostat stated that the death toll across the EU rose to 12% in September, rising rapidly from a low of 5% in July at the end of the summer.
The death toll in the region reached a peak of 40% in November 2020.
The countries with the lowest excess death rates in September include Sweden and Belgium. Belgium especially faces a high mortality rate in the early stages of the pandemic.
