Compared with other parts of Southern California, the governor debate in the first special election of Gavin Newsom in beautiful Yorba Linda was a cool night.
The debate was held at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library. Four of the top candidates: businessman John Cox, former San Diego Mayor Kevin Falcona, California Congressman Kevin Keeley and former U.S. Representative Doug Ossey answered Questions and shared their ruling voters when they successfully recalled Newsom, they should be elected as the new governor of California.
This is a historic debate, because the election for the removal of the governor has not entered the voting stage for 18 years. Kevin Faulkner answered the question of how he will solve the rising crime rate,
“As the governor, I will put the victims first and put criminals in jail.”
Regarding how to solve problems in education, John Cox said,
“I definitely advocate giving parents the right to educate.”
As to whether the governor will force schools to wear masks, Congressman Kevin Kiley is unanimous:
“I am 100% opposed to the rule of wearing masks. Parents know what is best for their children and they should make their own decisions.”
Faulconer and Cox are familiar with these types of debates and their answers reflect more elegance, while Kiley and Ose are less familiar. However, as former and current members of the legislature, Ose and Kiley have learned policy knowledge and specific solutions from these experiences. What these people lack is a more beautiful way of speaking, and Faulconer and Cox can only learn from these experiences. Carry out theoretical analysis.
Ose shines in solving California’s water crisis:
Water is not theoretical to me. These guys, they understand the story, I understand the reality. We need to increase supply. […] If you are a farmer, I will live in it. I live with this problem. If water is your problem, I am your person.

On the question of how he will conduct business in California as governor, Kevin Kiley focused on removing regulations. Kiley emphasized that large companies can circumvent these regulations because they have the funds to hire lawyers and maintain regulatory agencies.
Keely said,
“In the end it is the small business that pays the price. I will roll back PAGA immediately, and I will abolish AB5 immediately.”
When discussing the state of regulation, his lawsuit against Governor Newsom with Congressman James Gallagher, and the specific steps he will take to lift the quagmire of executive power, Keeley stood out. His poor performance in discussions on immigration and border policy is a hot issue for many California voters who support the recall. Kiley’s method of rolling back the sanctuary city policy and canceling the plan to incentivize illegal immigrants is to avoid it with caution, not a specific policy to be implemented.
The strengths of Cox and Faulconer are reflected in the fact that they are the people who actually run something. One is the city of San Diego, and the other is a successful home construction business. However, this is also where they both are weak. Faulkner’s appointment as mayor of San Diego cannot be considered a great success. Many conservatives rightly accuse Faulkner’s leadership of moving San Diego from a reliable red city and county to a dark blue progressive stronghold.
Although Cox successfully established a housing business, he did not seem to know that the governor’s cooperation and understanding of the nature of the current policies and the policies that need to be implemented were not known.
This is a solid forum for voters and those who are hesitant to hear the candidates and their policy views. I hope that the next debate will focus on the actual reasons for the removal, as the person who signed the petition said, and how each candidate’s action plan will address these issues.
The Nixon Foundation plans to have a second debate in the week of August 23 and has invited tonight’s candidates as well as Caitlin Jenner, Larry Elder and Governor Gavin Newsom to return to the stage.
