Fearing that a shortage of employees would disrupt the holiday season, employers in the UK offered bonuses of up to £2,000 to hire Christmas workers.
According to research conducted by the employment site Adzuna, there are currently 26,307 Seasonal job openings before the critical Christmas shopping period, It was almost twice as much as 13,668 at the same time a year ago.
Reflects Covid and Brexit, The number of seasonal job openings is more than a quarter higher than the 20,488 recorded in 2019 before the pandemic began.
According to an analysis of more than 1.2 million job postings on the Adzuna website, government statisticians tracked early signs of the job market that employers are preparing to hire more than 130,000 more employees this winter to respond to the hasty demand for goods and services.
Adzuna said that more than 1,300 job vacancies were advertised for Christmas bonuses, including up to £2,000 for Amazon seasonal warehouse workers, £1,000 for night sorters in DPD warehouses, and Ocado’s new The 500 GBP bonus paid by the employee, AO. com and select hotels.
It said that Tesco is looking for employees with the strongest seasonality. This winter, out of a total of 30,000 additional temporary positions at the retailer, there are still 871 vacancies in the UK. After the surge in online shopping during the pandemic, the courier company Hermes still has 740 job vacancies, and there are 200 Royal Mail to handle the courier business.
Due to shortages of truck drivers and warehouse staff leading to shortages on the streets before the holiday season, these figures came out of concerns about possible interruptions on Christmas Eve.
On Thursday, representatives of the hotel, retail and logistics departments told members of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee of the House of Commons that they hope that Christmas will pass smoothly despite the chronic lack of staff, severe delivery interruptions and rising costs.
Kate Nicholls, chief executive of UK Hospitality, said the supply chain for bars, hotels and restaurants is “far from elastic”. She said that about 20% of deliveries were interrupted, resulting in food and beverages being delivered at the wrong time at higher prices.
She said: “We will do our best to provide a wonderful Christmas, but not as good as we want.”
Tom Southall, the policy director of the Cold Chain Alliance, which represents the refrigerated logistics department, said the shortage of truck drivers and warehouse staff is affecting deliveries and may lead to shortages on supermarket shelves.
“Christmas as usual? Probably not. How will this show up, as we have seen in the past few months, there may be gaps in the shelves,” he said.
Ben Broadbent, the deputy governor of the Bank of England, told the committee that the shortage of workers will push up wages in certain sectors and may lead to higher levels of inflation.
Although he said that as the economic damage caused by the new crown virus dissipates, the impact of labor shortages will gradually fade, but he said that wage increases in certain industries will be “inevitable.”
“If you don’t have more people, and they are very professional, in the end-without some labor-saving technology-the output of the sector will be limited. The means to limit this situation will be to raise wages and prices,” He said.
Adzuna’s research shows that the sector with the most severe labor shortage currently has the largest number of job vacancies; in the retail, logistics, and warehousing sectors.

Adzuna co-founder Andrew Hunter said that due to shortages across the country, employers have to work harder than ever to fill seasonal job vacancies this year.
“This can be seen in the number of Christmas jobs still vacant, which is twice as many as last year.”
He said that large companies with flexible budgets are trying to use bonuses to fill the gap in temporary labor at Christmas, but small companies may have difficulty competing.
“Christmas is very important to the bottom line of many companies. If they cannot solve the problem of worker shortage as soon as possible, it may cause damage to both the company and consumers,” he said.
