Viva Magenta, a “nuanced” deep red that balances warmth and coolness, is “intrepid and a pulsating color whose vibrancy promotes optimism and joy,” says Pantone. They describe the color as empowering, exuberant, exciting, borderless, bold, witty, and perfect for “anyone with the same rebellious spirit.”
However, unlike the punchy reds that delineate spaces with fiery boldness, Viva Magenta brings a softer touch. “Confident but not aggressive, it’s a carmine that doesn’t dominate boldly, but takes a ‘fist in a velvet glove’ approach,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.
The “transformative” hue is also able to push design into a “more positive future” and apply it to the physical and virtual worlds. “As virtual worlds become an increasingly important part of our everyday lives, we wanted to draw inspiration from nature and the real thing,” says Eiseman. To do so, Viva Magenta was inspired by carmine, a natural Red dyes, one of which Pantone says is “one of the strongest and brightest (pigments)” in the world. “Rooted in the primordial, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us with the original substance,” she says. “Calling out the forces of nature, lifting our spirits and helping us build our inner strength.”
