- The Covax program has provided Covid-19 vaccine to 144 countries and regions.
- More than 7.5 billion doses of vaccine have been vaccinated worldwide.
- The five poorest countries in the world—Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congo, Haiti, South Sudan, and Yemen—do not have enough doses to cover 2% of their population.
Data on Wednesday showed that the Covax program, which aims to provide equitable access to the Covid-19 vaccine worldwide, has now provided more than 500 million doses of vaccine globally.
Covax was established to ensure that poorer countries get Covid vaccines, but the facility suffered a setback because rich countries went directly off the production line.
Covax, co-led by the World Health Organization (WHO), Vaccine Alliance Gavi, and Epidemic Prevention Innovation Alliance CEPI, stated at the beginning of this year that it hopes to provide 2 billion doses of vaccine in 2021.
Gavi CEO Seth Berkley said on Twitter: “Due to the hard work and dedication of partners and health workers, Covax has delivered 500 million Covid-19 vaccines to 144 countries and regions. .”
The 92 poorest participating regions can get JABs for free through Covax, and donors bear the cost.
“Covax is facing challenges in the form of export bans, supply shortages and vaccine nationalism in 2021. As we work to ensure that countries have as many doses as possible, the number of people arriving in countries is now rapidly increasing,” Berkeley said.
“When donors and manufacturers let us know when the vaccine will arrive, countries can plan a large-scale national rollout. This is the only way we can bridge the dangerous global vaccine divide.”
According to statistics from Agence France-Presse, more than 7.5 billion doses of vaccine have been vaccinated worldwide.
In high-income countries, about 143 doses are injected per 100 people, while in low-income countries, less than 7 doses are injected per 100 people.

Gavi said on Tuesday that the five poorest countries in the world — Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congo, Haiti, South Sudan and Yemen — do not even have enough doses to cover 2% of their population.
Covax’s collective development and procurement plan was set up in response to the possibility that no final vaccine will be available in most parts of the world.
According to its forecast, it should really take effect throughout 2022.
At the same time, the WHO stated that more than 3.3 million new coronavirus cases were reported last week, an increase of 6% from the previous week.
The number of newly registered deaths is less than 50,000, and all regions have reported stable or declining trends except for an increase of 5% in Europe.
