The latest report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Changet indicates that the risks of climate change are occurring faster than previously thought. Honestly, the report paints a grim picture and calls on world leaders to act swiftly to say, urgently, that “climate change is a threat to human well-being and the health of the planet”…and warns of delays in reducing greenhouse gas emissions Emissions efforts “would miss a short and quickly closing window of opportunity to ensure a livable and sustainable future for all.”
More than 70% of global emissions are caused by 100 companies. While I will share some of the ways we can personally reduce our carbon footprint, businesses and governments need to step up and do their part. Election of climate leaders who acknowledge the threat of climate change and want urgent action is critical. The weight of the world is not on your shoulders and this article is not meant to make you feel guilty. Hopefully it will help people understand how our culture and way of life affects the environment and what we can do to be more environmentally friendly.
This US per capita carbon dioxide emissions exceed 15 tons, while the rest of the world averages 4 tons. Much of what is most harmful to our planet comes from the burning of fossil fuels, including: coal, natural gas, and oil for energy use (electricity, heating, and transportation).
The carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases produced by our actions. Greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide and methane that cause global warming and climate change. Jesse and I often talk about what we can do on a personal level to change our own lives, so today I’m sharing some creative ways to reduce our carbon footprint.

Paper towels, plastic bags, tinfoil, and other single-use items make up the most trash in our landfills. Here are some ideas for replacing these common wastes and reducing your carbon footprint.

Reduce shipping:
Natural gas is one of the biggest contributors to our carbon footprint. Looking to reduce your mileage and gas emissions? If you live in an area with public transportation, take advantage of it as much as possible. If you have the option of cycling or walking to work. Consider carpooling whenever possible. If you live near town, then instead of driving to pick up something, make it part of your daily walk. Get creative and incorporate some outdoor sports. If you’re in the market for a new car, consider buying an electric or hybrid vehicle.
Reduce electricity and heat
Getting into the habit of unplugging lights and chargers when not in use is a great way to reduce electricity usage. This will also lower your electricity bill, which is a great incentive!
Lowering your heat by a few degrees and comfy under a blanket during the winter is another great way to reduce heat emissions.
