Two diplomats told Reuters that the European Union began to restore Covid-19 travel restrictions on Friday, such as the isolation and testing requirements for unvaccinated citizens of the United States and five other countries.

European Union countries have initiated a procedure to remove the United States from the list of countries where citizens can travel to the G27 without additional Covid-19 restrictions.

The non-binding list currently has 23 countries, including Japan, Qatar and Ukraine, but some of the 27 EU countries have set their own restrictions on U.S. tourists.

A diplomat said that other countries that will be removed from the safe travel list include Kosovo, Israel, Montenegro, Lebanon and North Macedonia.

The source and two other EU officials added that if there are no objections from EU countries, the EU’s decision on new travel restrictions for foreigners will become final on Monday.

The list is compiled based on the Covid-19 situation and reciprocity situation in each country/region.

Despite the EU’s appeal, the United States does not allow European citizens to visit freely. The EU is divided between those who promote equal treatment and those who rely more on tourism and are unwilling to restrict American travelers.
