Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced at the company’s artificial intelligence event on Thursday that the automaker will expand into the field of humanoid robots.
At the event, Musk launched the “Tesla Robot”, which is a 1.7-meter, 56-kilogram robot. He said that the robot will have a screen and its face should display information. According to the CEO, this humanoid robot can also lift 68 kilograms of weight and can carry about 20 kilograms of weight. Nevertheless, the robot can only travel about 8 kilometers per hour.
Musk quipped: “We set it to a mechanical level, a physical level, you can escape it, and it is likely to suppress it.”
According to Musk, the robot will use Tesla’s Autopilot software. It will be equipped with eight cameras, which will feed into the neural network that Tesla developed for its FSD software.
The neural network simulates the function of the human brain, because it allows the vehicle to analyze the surrounding environment through the camera, and by identifying and marking different routes and images to determine what needs to be done when encountering obstacles.
“Our car is a semi-intelligent robot with wheels,” Musk said. “It makes sense to say that [the software] To a human-like [form] Same thing too. ”
Musk said the robot will be “friendly” and ideally will be used to perform repetitive and dangerous tasks. He added that the real test will be how the robot navigates the world without being clearly told what to do.
“There will be far-reaching applications to the economy. In the future, manual labor will be an option,” Musk said.
The CEO provided a visual representation of what he wanted the robot to look like, but Tesla has not yet built a powerful robot. He said the company plans to develop a prototype sometime next year.
Musk said that this robot fits perfectly with Tesla’s mission and will use many of the same materials that the company uses for cars.
“We are making works that are useful for [building] A humanoid robot, so we should be able to do it. If we don’t do this, others will do it — we want to make sure it’s safe,” Musk said.
Although the Tesla founder did not give a specific deadline for prototype release, Musk is known for making major commitments to future construction. On Tesla’s last “Autonomy Day”, Musk said that Tesla will By the end of 2020, “1 million robot taxis will be on the road”. However, the company has not yet released a fully self-driving car because its current FSD software still requires a licensed operator to monitor the vehicle.
