Eufy Security Video Doorbell Chime Review – Fast, reliable alarm, but expensive compared to the Amazon Echo Do

This will be a brief review. I recently got a rave review of the Eufy Security Dual Camera Video Doorbell, and I’m a huge fan of the Video Doorbell 2K I reviewed two years ago.

Eufy didn’t sell extra bells when I reviewed the Video Doorbell 2K. You can choose a doorbell with HomeBase or a doorbell with Chime. HomeBase can be used as a ringtone, and Eufy can be used Amazon Echo device as ringtone Also, this is what I use all the time.

However, I sometimes find that Alexa alarms don’t always go off in time. This seems to affect all brands. There may only be a delay of a few seconds, but if you don’t react fast enough, it could mean you’ll end up chasing the postman down the street.

The HomeBase is in my living room, and the distance between the doorbell and my Eufy Security Floodlight Cam 2 Pro is equidistant. However, if I have music on in the office, I can’t hear it. My Echo Show 8 usually alerts me well, but I also want the hallway chime so all our rooms upstairs can hear it.

Unlike competing brand chimes, the Eufy Security Video Doorbell Chime comes in two parts. The ringtone itself is also a USB dongle. The dongle plugs into the back of the eufyBase/HomeBase 2.

The reason is that the Eufy Security product does not connect directly to your WiFi. Instead, it uses its own hidden WiFi network, which seems to offer better performance than competing brands that connect directly to your WiFi (assuming the HomeBase is well placed).

The problem here is that it limits you to just one extra ringtone, whereas with Ring I can have as many as I want.

Setup – For HomeBase 2 only and for Dual Camera Video Doorbell

Setup is simple and only takes a few seconds. In the app, go to doorbell settings, select Indoor Chime and Eufy Doorbell Chime. This will then give you step-by-step instructions.

Basically, you just plug the USB dongle into the back of the HomeBase, then plug in your ringtone, press and hold the sync button for a few seconds, and wait for them to pair. You can control the volume of the ringtone using the buttons on the ringtone.

Performance

The chimes work as expected. There is no perceptible delay between HomeBase and the ringing of the bell.

The default tone doesn’t match the HomeBase, and I think the volume is a bit low by default. You can change both using the buttons on the side of the ringtone. There are only 3 volume settings, but I found the top setting to be loud enough.

Price and Alternatives

I think Eufy Chime feels overpriced, but maybe not. To provide some pricing context, competing brand bells are priced as follows:

• Brand new bell: £30
• brand new Ringtones Pro: £50
• Arlo Smart Chime: £60
• Arlo Chime 2: £45

The Eufy Security Video Doorbell Chime is not a very exciting product, but it works well and does what I want. The Video Doorbell 2K + HomeBase is currently only £129, so £35 seems a bit pricey by comparison.

Most people should be able to get away with just a HomeBase 2 and a few Echo Dots. This is well worth considering if you have a bigger house and want to make sure the alarm goes off as soon as possible.
