A fire broke out in a 20-story residential building in Milan, and rescuers scrambled to ensure that no one was caught in the flames and smoke.
Sunday’s fire started on the upper floors of a tower in the southern suburbs of the capital of Lombardy.
The fire department said on its Twitter account: “The flames then spread to lower places,” causing heavy smoke.
The building houses approximately 70 families and they are being contacted to ensure that no one is missing.
The mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, told the Evening Post: “The firefighters ran from apartment to apartment and knocked on the door to make sure no one stayed inside.” “But we are optimistic because people have time to go. Get out,” he added.
The newspaper said that about 20 residents had slightly inhaled smoke. Dozens of ambulances and fire trucks were at the scene.
