Design and features

Preset

Before choosing your Fleximounts elevated garage rack, please take some time to make sure you choose the correct one. Not only do you need to consider your space, but you also need to find out the location of the ceiling joists and pay attention to their relative positions with the other functions of the garage. You need to consider factors such as the moving parts of the garage door, door clearance, and any head space required to walk under the rack, or possibly the height of the vehicle.

We did our homework and picked a 4’x6′ rack, but it still barely made it hard to leave enough space for the outer door of our garage (which I didn’t expect). So be careful!

You have many options to choose from:

  • 4’x6′
  • 3’x8
  • 3“x6′
  • 2’x8′

You can also choose white or black.

The Fleximounts website provides some examples to help you develop your own layout.

set up

It took my husband about 2.5 hours to install the Fleximounts elevated garage frame. When my son and I wandered around, you really can’t count us as helpers. If there is a better assistant, it will be faster.

The manual says you need a pencil, cordless drill, tape measure, stud detector, ladder, safety glasses, screwdriver and wrench. We also used an impact gun, and we found it to be preferable to the small hexagon wrench and socket wrench that came with it. We just used a ladder, but having a scaffolding will make the work much easier, especially measuring to determine the layout.

The final assembly is very simple, and the parts are intuitively combined. The instruction manual is easy to understand and the website also has Installation video.

The hardest part is to map out the position that fits the ceiling. Unless they are visible, you need to use stud detectors to locate the joists in the ceiling and then determine whether you want to align the ceiling brackets parallel or vertically (for parallel installations, the joists must be 48 inches apart). You also need to make sure that the vertical pillars are properly placed on the ceiling bracket, but also hung on the wire mesh so that your shelf can be hung according to your needs. We wanted to put ours in the corner, so it took some time to set it up.

We put it all on the ground and assembled the shelf. Then measure and assemble the vertical column.

Then he mapped the location of the starting corner and installed the corner ceiling brackets, and then the other three ceiling brackets.

After installing the ceiling bracket, we use screws and lock nuts (four per column) to connect the vertical columns. If you are using impact drivers, please be careful not to over-tighten them; we did peel off one of the 16 ones. This is tricky in the corner, in retrospect, it would be easier to attach the corner vertical column to the ceiling bracket before we install it, so please pay attention to those who install it close to the wall.

Then you just need to place and connect the wire grid. Two people will be very helpful in this step. A nice feature of this design is the clips you use to hold the shelf in place. This makes it easier to position the grid, and it also allows you to free your hands to fix the column to the grid. Without these clips, it would be impossible to assemble it into one person’s work.

Another feature of the Fleximounts overhead garage rack we like is the grid itself, through which you can put things on the shelf. Please pay attention to what you put along the edge, because there is no stop lip or similar to prevent items from falling off the edge.

Performance

In general, Fleximounts overhead garage rack is a very beautiful and effective storage system.

When drawing the shelf position, you can adjust the height from 22 inches to 40 inches. As you can see, we had to make ours shorter to fit the door gap. In our case, the cropping options here will be more general, but may not be suitable for everyone.

The 4’x6′ option we chose has a load-bearing capacity of 450 pounds and provides 80 cubic feet of storage space at the maximum height (our space is small and cannot accommodate door clearance).

I’m not the only one who likes Fleximounts elevated garage racks. Amazon has nearly 8,000 ratings and is currently rated at 4.7 points (out of 5 stars). This rack is also the number one in the Amazon ceiling-mounted storage rack category.

what do I like

  • Lots of storage space
  • Looks attractive
  • Heavy burden

What will i change

  • There is a lip option on the edge to prevent spills or accidents
  • The trim size option on the vertical column is helpful to us

Final thoughts

Fleximounts elevated garage racks are both durable and beautiful. It provides us with a brand new way to store our things without taking up any floor space. Before clicking “Add to Cart”, be sure to consider all aspects of the garage configuration.
