Turkey cannot bear the burden of the new immigrants from Afghanistan. Foreign Minister Mevrut Cavusoglu said after a meeting with the German Foreign Minister on Sunday (August 29) that there was still a threat to the new immigrants after the Taliban came to power. Worry.
The events in Afghanistan exacerbated the EU’s fears of a recurrence of the refugee crisis in 2015, when nearly 1 million people fled war and poverty in the Middle East and other regions, crossing from Turkey to Greece, and then heading north to richer countries.
In order to prevent the flow of refugees, the EU reached an agreement with Turkey in 2016 to accept Syrians fleeing the war in their country in exchange for a multi-billion-euro refugee project.
Cavusoglu said on Sunday that if migrants from Afghanistan turn into a crisis, European and regional countries will also be affected, and lessons should be learned from the Syrian refugee crisis.
“As Turkey, we have fully fulfilled our moral and humanitarian responsibilities on immigration issues,” Cavusoglu said at a joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Heikomas.
“We cannot bear the additional burden of refugees,” Cavusoglu said.
Turkey currently hosts 3.7 million Syrian refugees, which is the largest refugee population in the world, in addition to approximately 300,000 Afghans. Due to the expected wave of new immigrants from Afghanistan, it has been strengthening measures on the eastern border to prevent crossing.
Mas said that Germany is grateful for Turkey’s proposal to continue to help operate Kabul Airport after NATO withdraws, and that Germany is ready to provide financial and technical support.
“It is in our own interest to ensure that the collapse of Afghanistan does not destabilize the entire region,” he said in a statement.
Mas is heading to Turkey, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan and Qatar to demonstrate Germany’s support for the countries most likely to be affected by the Afghan crisis.
Turkey’s neighbouring Greece has completed a 40-kilometer-long fence and surveillance system to prevent immigrants who still manage to enter Turkey and try to reach the European Union.
