From internship to employment! (the second part)

Your first internship doesn’t have to be just a college requirement – it can also serve as an exciting learning pathway and (if you play well) even land you your first job! We spoke to two former Brevo interns (who are now happily working at the agency) to find out how their first internships broadened their horizons and shaped their career paths.

In case you missed it, watch part 1 of our ex-Brevo intern recommendations here!

Carissa, 22 years old

Graphic Designer

Former Intern, Batch 2018

Let’s be honest: when I applied for an internship, Brevo was the only company that responded to my application LOL! I’m hoping to get an internship at a small company not far from my college dorm. I don’t want to intern at a really big agency because I’ve heard they can be pretty brutal.

Second: I hate long commutes.I can absolutely If I interned at a company far away, I would get lost on the streets of Manila! Finally, Brevo’s Jobstreet profile said most of their employees were young – deep down, I was like “yes, my people!”

Brevo responded quickly to my application. I remember getting a response three days later and having an interview on Friday. The following week, I started my internship.

It was a new experience for me, having to work in an unfamiliar place with people I didn’t know. Thankfully, Brevo welcomed me and helped me settle in quickly and comfortably. It’s also very calming – I never have to work overtime and everyone is so helpful whenever I need guidance.

In retrospect, my internship did not come across any major challenges! Oh, except for one thing: the elevator. Our old office building had extremely long lines in the morning, so I had to get to work an hour early. Standing in line for the elevator sometimes takes me over 20 minutes (!!!), so I’ve learned to pack or deliver my own lunch so I don’t have to deal with the crazy lines.

After the internship, Imran said he would save a spot for me, so I started working as a full-time graphic designer a month after graduation. I am very happy that I quickly formed a good friendship with my Brevo colleagues. When I started working on realz, I liked that I didn’t have to start over. Most of all, I’m glad Brevo has created a workspace for me where I can truly be myself.

Brevo has grown in many ways since I joined three years ago. We moved to a larger office space that fit us all, we gained more clients, welcomed more team members, and drank more wine! But one thing that hasn’t changed is Brevo’s strength — it’s still thriving despite the pandemic. We can always find a way to solve a problem.

Gio, 24

Graphic Designer

Former Intern, Batch 2018

Back in college, I was looking for an advertising agency to apply for an internship. I asked my friends if they knew of any institutions with openings for art interns, and Carissa told me about Brevo. So I submitted my portfolio and sent it off.

I quickly saw how Brevo prioritizes a proper work-life balance and how it fosters a calm work environment. My colleagues helped me grow as a designer, but we still managed to have a lot of fun. We watch movies after get off work, go for drinks at the end of the day, and even run around in office chairs! It’s good and I love every part of it.

Before, I used to struggle with my creative process. I sometimes get stuck at the beginning. Thankfully, my co-designers shared their own creative process and how they would overcome creative block. They would guide me through the difficulties I encountered and give me new insight into how to come up with better ideas.

I really enjoyed my internship experience at Brevo. I learned a lot from other designers, so I wanted to stay with Brevo and continue to grow. On the last day of my internship, Imran asked me if I wanted to be a full-time graphic designer after graduation. I gladly accept. Three years later, I’m still growing and having fun as a designer at Brevo!
