Fruit Salad Toppings and Substitutions
This section explains how to choose ingredients for the best fruit salad recipes, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
Fresh fruits:
What’s in a fruit salad? What fruit do you want to eat! Below are the fresh summer fruits I used in this recipe, along with other substitutions so you can use whatever you have on hand.
- berry – I used fresh strawberries and blueberries, but you can also use raspberries and blackberries. (If you prefer a lower-sugar fruit salad recipe, make it entirely with berries only—they’re the lowest-sugar fruit.)
- green grapes – I used green, but you can also use halved red, purple or black grapes.
- tangerine – Use any type of orange you like. Navel, blood, or temple oranges are all delicious options. You can even add canned if you don’t have fresh.
- fresh pineapple – Choose a firm, fresh one with bright green leaves. It should be slightly yellow on the outside – although a more yellow color is fine – and the skin should deform slightly when squeezed.
- kiwi fruit – Adds sour, sweet, sour (and lots of vitamin C!). Try other tropical fruits if you like.
- fresh mint – optional, but adds a bright and refreshing flavor. You can also choose other fresh herbs, such as basil.
Variations: Add other fruits!
You can use any fruit you like. Try apples, peaches, cantaloupe, pears, honeydew melon, plums, nectarines, apricots, pomegranate seeds, and even bananas.
In order to maintain the correct ratio with the dressing, Keep total fruit to around 8 cups.
Fruit Salad Dressing:
You only need 2 simple ingredients to make fruit salad dressing:
- lemon – Since we need lemon juice and lemon zest to make this simple dressing, fresh lemons work best. You can also use limes (including lime juice and lime zest) to make honey-lime dressing.
- Honey – I like to use Zero Sugar Honey (It’s still sweet, the fruit already has lots of natural sugar!), but regular honey works too.You can also use maple syrup (or Sugar-Free Maple Syrup) instead, or add a teaspoon of vanilla extract for extra flavor.
