The town of Kemmerer in Wyoming will be home to the Natrium experimental nuclear power plant operated by TerraPower. Announce Tuesday.
Both Bill Gates and Warren Buffett support the Natrium reaction demonstration project, which will replace the coal-fired power plant that will shut down in 2025. The nuclear power plant is one of two nuclear power plants supported by the Department of Energy (DOE) and is expected to be available in seven years, according to Congressional regulations.
The news came after President Biden signed a bipartisan infrastructure agreement on Monday.
“President Biden signed a bipartisan infrastructure agreement, and today the U.S. Department of Energy has invested more than $1.5 billion in Wyoming,” said Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm. “The energy communities that have powered our generations have a real opportunity to power our clean energy future through projects like these that provide high-paying jobs and lead the next wave of nuclear technology.”
Earth Power Is a nuclear reactor design and development engineering company headquartered in Bellevue, Washington. The company is developing a nuclear fast reactor, also known as a traveling wave reactor.
Gates founded the company in 2006. He is a member of a private sector group that decided to develop nuclear energy to meet electricity demand and mitigate climate change.
