Prosecutors said on Wednesday that German police had arrested a British man working at the British Embassy in Berlin on suspicion of spying for Russian intelligence in exchange for cash.
Germany’s top prosecutor said in a statement that the man’s apartment and workplace were searched after he was arrested in Potsdam, which borders the German capital, on Tuesday.
The 57-year-old has no diplomatic immunity, and he is suspected of passing documents obtained through his work to representatives of Russian intelligence agencies.
He allegedly received an unknown amount of cash in exchange for information.
German prosecutors stated that the arrest was the result of a joint investigation by German and British authorities. The Metropolitan Police stated that the investigation of David S involved counter-terrorism officials in Scotland Yard.
The Metropolitan Police said in a statement: “This man was arrested in the Berlin area on suspicion of engaging in crimes related to’intelligence agent activities’ (under German law).”
“The first task of the investigation remains the German authorities. As the investigation continues, officials of the Counter-Terrorism Command will continue to maintain contact with their German counterparts.”
The Metropolitan Anti-Terrorism Command is responsible for investigating suspected violations of the Official Secrets Act.
The suspect will be brought before the investigating judge early Wednesday afternoon.
