Souness had many years of success as Liverpool owner in the 1990s. He was also responsible for rebuilding the club. He told Sky Sports: “I look at this Arsenal team. It may be the next manager’s team.
“As a manager, I said that time is not your friend.
“I think Arsenal will have a tough few years, depending on how these young people progress, but if they insist on using Arteta, it will be a painful journey.
“But whether it’s Arteta or someone else, it will be a painful journey because I don’t think these guys will have an impact on the town when Chelsea come to City, Manchester City come to City, Liverpool and Manchester United come-this is Arsenal soccer club.
“Under (Arsene) Wenger, Arsenal have been successful in recent history and have shown up on most Saturday and Sunday afternoons and saw a team win, so now for the fans this is A pill that is hard to swallow.”
