The precious weapons of the Bronze Age are currently on display in the showcase as the “November Collection”.
In the 1950s, the excavator operator Albert Biesemann dug the sword on a lake in the lower Rhine. No one was interested in it for a long time. In November last year, Bieseman’s grandson remembered the lost property and carried the sword with him as a decoration for a small Saint Martin celebration with his children. Soon after, he inspected the 58 cm long sword at the museum in Xanten, as reported by Christian Biesemann (32).
Mark on the blade
According to local scientist Julia Rücker, experts at the LVR Ground Monument Protection Office were surprised when they received a photo with the motto “Roman Sword from Family Property”. The material sample clearly shows that this is a Bronze Age sword from the late 9th century BC-and it was actually used in combat as evidence of the marks on the blade.
Presumably, it was later deliberately destroyed by the owner. The description of the exhibition on the museum website states: “This unusable situation can often be observed in the late Bronze Age treasures, which were ceremonially placed as rivers or mud warehouses,” the exhibition on the museum website described as This valuable weapon provides a fairly high insurance policy. Biesemann offered it to the museum as a permanent loan with an initial period of 10 years.
