  • salmon – Use fresh or frozen.
  • stone ground mustard – Feel free to use Dijon. Avoid American mustard.
  • Honey – Maple syrup or agave nectar also works.
  • smoked paprika – Use your favorite chili powder.
  • dried basil – If you have fresh basil on hand, buy fresh basil.
  • red pepper flakes – You can use cayenne pepper instead.
  • garlic cloves – Garlic powder is a great substitute.
  • salt and pepper – I prefer kosher salt and fresh pepper.
  • lemon – Lime juice can also be used.
  • Chinese chives – Fresh parsley is another garnish option.

How to Make Honey Mustard Grilled Salmon

The honey mustard sauce needs to be mixed thoroughly so the salmon can absorb the flavor evenly. Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post for more detailed instructions.

  • Prepare the oven. Preheat oven to 400F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. You can also use parchment paper.
  • Make the honey mustard sauce. Mix mustard and honey, smoked paprikabasil, red pepper flakes, and minced garlic in a small bowl until smooth.
  • Coat the salmon. Pour honey mustard mixture over salmon. Rub it all over.
  • Bake it. Place in the oven and bake for 8-10 minutes or until the salmon is done to your desired doneness.
  • Bake it. Remove salmon from oven. Unwrap the broiler. Place the salmon under the broiler for 2-3 minutes to caramelize the honey on top.
  • Serve. Remove from the heat and sprinkle the salmon with chives or parsley. Serve and enjoy.

Tips and variations

This Grilled Honey Mustard Salmon turns out perfectly as long as it's fully defrosted and baked at the right temperature.

  • Marinate it. Chill salmon in honey mustard mixture for 30 minutes or up to 1 hour for more flavor.
  • Check the temperature. To prevent salmon from drying out, use an oven thermometer to confirm the baking temperature is right.
  • Thaw it. Never bake frozen salmon directly. It needs to be thawed. Frozen salmon that is not thawed properly will release a lot of moisture and actually dry out the fish due to the longer baking time.
  • Add nuts. After adding the honey mustard mixture, top the fish with a layer of chopped pecans or almonds for a nutty crunch.

How to store and reheat leftovers

This grilled salmon is not suitable for freezing as the texture will change when thawed and it will be overcooked when reheated.

  • refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Place it in the coldest spot at the back of the refrigerator, as salmon is very sensitive to temperature changes.
  • To reheat: Place it in the microwave in 30 second intervals until hot. You can also place it in a saucepan, cover and cook over medium heat for 8-10 minutes. Bake in a 350 degree Fahrenheit oven for 15-20 minutes will also work.

This quick honey mustard salmon recipe is an easy cleanup dinner with the flavor of garlic, spicy red pepper flakes, and tangy lemon juice.



  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. Line a baking sheet with foil.
  3. Place salmon in center of lined baking sheet.
  4. In a small bowl add mustard, honey, smoked paprika, basil, red pepper flakes and minced garlic. Stir until smooth.
