This might be my favorite treat!Since I like to make my own sauces (well, let’s be honest, when I have time…), a recent Saturday that wasn’t too busy was the perfect excuse to make a homemade, simple red Hot Sauce Recipe start from scratch.
What is Hot Sauce?
Enchilada sauce is a vibrant and flavorful Mexican red sauce made with peppers, garlic, tomatoes and spices.It adds a pleasing flavor to many dishes such as EnchiladasBurrito, and Tamales.

Ingredients and Substitutes

- olive oil – For frying garlic.You can also use avocado oil, your favorite neutral cooking oil, or even butter (or butter).
- garlic – I use fresh garlic for flavor, but you can use 2 tsp canned garlic or 1/2 tsp garlic powder for convenience.
- chicken soup – I usually buy low sodium chicken broth, so you may need to adjust the salt according to your saltiness.You can also use bone broth For extra nutrition, or vegetable broth makes this vegetarian.
- ketchup – Tomato sauce adds classic flavor and richness, making it one of the essential ingredients in enchilada recipes. If you don’t have any, you can substitute crushed tomatoes pureed in a blender or tomato paste diluted with water.
- seasoning – For classic flavors we combine paprikaDry oreganofragrant Cumintasty onion powder, sea salt and black pepper (optional). If you like a kick, add 1/4 teaspoon (or more) paprika.

How to Make Hot Sauce

- Saute the garlic. Pour in olive oil and heat medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant.
- Mix the sauce. Add broth, tomato paste, paprika, oregano, cumin, onion powder, salt, and pepper (if using) to pot. Blend until smooth.
- simmer. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then cover and simmer until the sauce has reached your desired consistency. Season red sauce with sea salt and black pepper, if desired.


Tip: For faster results, use a larger pan.
The thickening process may take more or less time depending on the size of the pan. The bigger the pan, the faster you can make homemade salsa!
storage instructions
- shop: Store homemade taco sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
- freeze: For longer storage, store the sauce in a zip-top bag or airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 6 months. Thaw overnight on the counter or in the refrigerator, and stir before using.
