Ingredients and Substitutes
This section explains how to choose the best toppings for Strawberry Spinach Salad, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
Spinach Strawberry Salad:
The base of this Strawberry Spinach Salad recipe uses just 4 fresh, simple staples:
- spinach – Young spinach leaves are best for this recipe because they have a milder taste and are less bitter than mature varieties, but any fresh spinach will do.
- strawberry – Sweet and bright, strawberries are the star of the salad, but you can add other berries like fresh blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and even pears.
- goat cheese – If goat cheese is not your thing, you can use another crumbly cheese. Feta will add a more tangy flavor to the salad, while blue cheese will add a rich and tangy flavor.
- almond – I used sliced almonds, but you can use any nut you like. My favorites are walnuts, pecans or pistachios. For a nut-free option, use sunflower seeds instead.
Variation: Add red onion!
This is a common ingredient in strawberry spinach salad recipes. Sometimes I add 1/4 cup of thinly sliced red onion.
Strawberry Spinach Salad Dressing:
I use my homemade Poppy Seed Dressing Recipe It only needs 5 ingredients (plus salt) and is ready in 5 minutes:
- mayonnaise – I use homemade Avocado Oil Mayonnaise When I have time to do it, but This is my favorite store bought brand when i’m in a hurry. Either work! You can also use Greek yogurt for a lighter option (the flavor will be stronger).
- olive oil – This spinach and strawberry salad recipe uses olive oil, but you can also use avocado oil or any oil you like. I try to avoid highly processed seed oils such as vegetable oils, but from a recipe standpoint they work just fine.
- Honey – I usually use unsweetened honey Make this salad lower in sugar, but regular is fine too.
- white vinegar – This helps to emulsify the dressing and balance out the sweetness. You can also use apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar, or lemon juice. You can also add a teaspoon of Dijon mustard if you want a more complex flavor.
- poppy seeds – It wouldn’t be a poppy seed dressing without them! They add a savory and nutty flavor to dressings.
- sea salt – Adjust to taste. Feel free to add black pepper too if you like.
