Instagram has Admit to CNN that it promoted accounts that celebrate extreme dieting and eating disorders, The channel reported and admitted that it shouldn’t.
The extreme diet account was promoted to an Instagram account set up by the staff of Senator Richard Blumenthal. The Connecticut senator’s team registered an account as a 13-year-old girl and began to follow some dieting and support for eating disorders (the latter should be banned by Instagram). Soon, Instagram’s algorithm began to almost completely recommend that young teen accounts should follow an increasing number of extreme diet accounts, the senator told CNN.
Blumenthal’s office shared with CNN the list of accounts recommended by the Instagram algorithm. After CNN sent samples from the five account list to Instagram for comment, the company deleted them, saying all accounts violated its policy of encouraging eating disorders.
Blumenthal said in an interview with CNN on Monday: “This experience is a very vivid demonstration of how [Facebook’s] Claims to protect children or delete accounts that may be dangerous to them are absolutely nonsense. “
The senator asked stupid questions about the “Finsta” account, and now has a perfect execution of Instagram’s misleading statement about its participating machines. I am worried that it will not be widely reported.
