Ms. Pfeiffer, you play a rather weird and weird woman in “French Export”. Does the grotesque humor of this movie match your own?
I hope I am as funny and witty as my character Francis! Unlike them, unfortunately, I-like most of them-are busy with being polite and considering the feelings of others. This may be why this role is so attractive to me: I can perform everything I don’t have, that is, an emotional and psychological wrecking ball, using its humor as a coping mechanism.
When you have to play someone who is very different from you, does that make things easier or harder?
It can go any way. Sometimes I find it difficult to embody a person who is very similar to me. But the opposite can happen. When a character is far away from me, it is difficult to anchor emotionally. I once played a murderer in the movie “White Oleander”. This may be the most difficult role in my career, because I have the best wishes in the world and I can’t find anything in this woman that I like or have anything to do with me. Every day in front of the camera is fucking hard work, not fun at all.
You once said that it takes a long time for you to participate in a role, and then you are completely addicted to your role. Do you have withdrawal symptoms at the end of the movie?
Am I really talking about addiction? Dedication may be a better word. When I decide on a project, I will devote myself wholeheartedly to it. Received the end of production from the inspection. Even long before I stood in front of the camera, I thought of this role. This may be one of the reasons why I have relatively few movies: I am usually too tired. This is why it is impossible to talk about withdrawal symptoms in the end. I am so tired, I am happy when I can leave this character behind.
For a long time, you were considered picky about your work, but in the end you retreated a lot. Have you found the joy of work again, or have you had a better role in the meantime?
Probably both. In fact, for a long time, I rarely read scripts that I think are convincing. But that was also when my children were young, so I might not be open to new projects in my mind. Every time I have to carefully weigh the location and time of the film, and whether it is worth it to me. The older the two are, the more predictable the end of school and the more the work can become the focus. Soon there will be more offers that interest me. In fact, shooting is more fun for me than it has been in a long time. It would be great if there was no Corona.
Do you emphasize working under pandemic conditions?
I’m making a new “Ant-Man” movie in London. This is my second job since the pandemic began. Wearing a mask and getting tested is tedious, but it’s not bad. I don’t find it unsafe in the UK. After all, many people are vaccinated.
Are you sure?
