Italian Word of the Day: Telecomando (remote control)

These days, my son, who is now an extremely inquisitive toddler, can’t keep his hands off the telecomando (remote control) for the television. He’s so obsessed that I might have to buy him one of his own!

Telecomando is formed of two parts: the prefix tele- which means “at or over a long distance” and the noun comando (command, order).

Telecomando is a masculine noun whose plural form is telecomandi.

i telecomandi

When you think of a telecomando, two common devices that most likely pop to mind are the telecomando del televisore / della TV (TV remote) and the telecomando per cancelli / del cancello (remote control for gates).

Closely related to this noun is the verb telecomandare which means to operate by remote control.
