Madden is a Hall of Fame coach who won Super Bowl 11 with the Oakland Raiders. He retired as a coach in 1978, but his boisterous personality led him into a 14-year career as a broadcaster, during which John Madden Football first released for Sega Genesis.

The concept of Madden Football actually started in 1984, when EA Sports Founder Tripp Hawkins approached the coach. Madden actually taught a class at the University of California, Berkeley, teaching fans the ins and outs of a football game, and he had hoped that a computer program from EA Sports would do just that.
Madden insisted that if he was going to use his name in the game, it had better be as realistic as possible, and coaches were not satisfied until 1988 (computer constraints made it difficult to fit 11 players per team, but Madden insisted).
1990’s John Madden Soccer was expected to sell 75,000 copies – 400,000 copies were sold, and a legend was born. The trainer’s audio one-liners, such as “Boom!” and, “Where did that truck come from” help boost the game’s popularity, and famous ambulances run over players.
Madden was the best-selling sports video game series by 1996, and the NFLPA signed an exclusive rights deal with EA Sports in 2004, meaning the video game would never face any real competition, as no other game could use teams, Players, stadiums, etc.
