In this podcast, we discuss the dangers that arise when we are lured into thinking that our experiences as families with financial constraints and budgets somehow provide us with intelligence to assess opportunities for national government spending. If we fall into this trap, we undermine our own future by limiting the scope and size of the public sector. The only way we can assess whether government fiscal policy is achieving its purpose is by knowing that purpose, which is to promote human and environmental well-being in a practical way. The “numbers” needed to achieve that – deficits and the like – should be on the government scoreboard. But if we mistakenly think that numbers are what matter, we lose sight of the functional purpose of government.
