Liz Truss calls on Putin to intervene in Belarusian immigration crisis

Wrote in the “Sunday Telegraph”, Liz Truss Said Russia has a “clear responsibility” to end the escalating immigration standoff, adding that the UK “will not look away”.

A large number of migrants are in temporary camps on the Belarus side of the border, and Polish authorities report every day that migrants are trying to break the gap.

The Belarusian Ministry of Defense accused Poland of conducting an “unprecedented” military build-up at the border, saying that immigration control does not guarantee the concentration of 15,000 soldiers with the support of tanks, air defense assets and other weapons.

The European Union accuses Belarus’s authoritarian president, Alexander Lukashenko Encouraging illegal border crossings as a “hybrid attack” in retaliation for the EU’s sanctions against its government for suppressing domestic protests after his controversial 2020 re-election.

Belarus denies these allegations, but said it will no longer prevent refugees and migrants from trying to enter the European Union.

Ms. Truss called on the Kremlin to intervene in this crisis. She wrote: “Russia has a clear responsibility in this regard. It must urge the Belarusian authorities to end the crisis and engage in dialogue.”

Russia and Belarus have reached an alliance agreement aimed at establishing close political and military relations.

Ms. Terras added that the standoff “marked the latest move by the Lukashenko regime to disrupt regional security.

She wrote: “He used desperate immigrants as pawns to create instability and insist on power, regardless of human costs.”

“Britain will not look away. We will stand with our allies who are at the forefront of freedom in the region.”
