Low Carb Alfredo Sauce Ingredients
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for a quick and easy Alfredo sauce, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. See recipe card below for measurements.
- butter -I use grass-fed butter here, but any unsalted variety will do.
- garlic – This Ketchup Alfredo Garlic Sauce doesn’t skimp on garlic! I used 6 cloves here, but feel free to reduce the amount if you want less garlic. You can also use garlic powder instead (use 3/4 tsp instead of 6 cloves).
- heavy cream – This adds richness to the sauce while keeping it pourable. If you need a substitute and don’t mind the taste, you can also use full-fat canned coconut milk instead.I do not recommend almond milk, because the final sauce was too watery.
- grated parmesan cheese – this adds to the flavor and Thicken the Alfredo sauce. Grate it if possible, or use the pre-ground kind. Chopped parm should work too, but may take longer to melt. As a substitute, cream cheese can act as a thickener, but the taste is completely different, so I don’t recommend it unless you want a richer, creamier sauce.
- sea salt and black pepper – You’ll want to add a little more than you think you need, as the sauce will mellow when mixed with toppings like pasta or vegetables. If you don’t like the look of black pepper in the sauce, use white pepper instead.
- nutmeg – This is a classic ingredient in any easy Alfredo sauce recipe, but you can omit it if you want.

How to Make Alfredo Sauce from Scratch
This section describes how to make a low-carb keto alfredo sauce, with step-by-step photos and details on the technique. See the recipe card below for full instructions.
- saute. Add the butter to a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and saute until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
- simmer. Add the heavy cream and bring the sauce to a simmer, continuing to simmer until the sauce thickens and reduces by about 1/3. The bigger your pan, the faster it will reduce.

- Bold. Reduce heat and gradually add Parmesan cheese and stir until smooth. Add spices to taste and adjust the consistency of the sauce. (If the sauce is too thick, add cream, if the sauce is too thin, add more cheese.)

Can you freeze Alfredo sauce?
Yes, you can freeze homemade Alfredo sauce. Transfer it to an airtight container (preferably a freezer bag) and freeze for 2-3 months. It may clump after thawing, but follow the reheating instructions to fix it.
Reheat Instructions:
If freezing, thaw overnight in the refrigerator or reheat directly from the freezer. Reheat on low power on the stovetop or microwave until warm, stirring frequently to break up any lumps. If it’s still not smooth, you can give it a quick blend.
