The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said it will take action to exonerate two people convicted of murdering Malcolm X, a black activist and civil rights advocate in 1965, which will represent an official admission of errors in this case.
Malcolm X became the national spokesperson for the Islamic State, an African-American Muslim organization that supports black separatism. Before disillusionment, he spent more than ten years in the organization, and publicly broke with the organization in 1964, and eased some of his early views of racial separation.
He was shot dead in the Audubon Ballroom in New York while preparing to deliver a speech. Three members of the Islamic State were convicted in the shooting.
The district attorney’s actions were first reported by the New York Times and confirmed to Reuters by a spokesperson for the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office on Wednesday.
In an interview with The Times, the Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. apologized on behalf of law enforcement. He said it made the families of the two men-Mohamed Aziz and Khalil Islam. feel disappointed.
