MediaTek Dimensity 9000 released-can TSMC 4nm chipset beat Samsung 4nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen1?

Sharing is caring!

There have been a lot of leaks about the new flagship chipsets of MediaTek, Qualcomm and Samsung, enough for me to make a Contrast stickers The latest flagship chipset.

Yesterday, MediaTek officially announced the Dimensity 9000. Obviously, all the leaks got the name wrong, and the frequency has now been confirmed. But we now also know more about other specifications.

In recent news, it seems that Qualcomm will also use a different name than expected, and it is believed that the new chipset is called Snapdragon 8 Gen1 instead of Snapdragon 898.

With the exposure of the complete specifications of the Dimensity 9000, it is clear that MediaTek has the strongest chipset in many years. I suspect that its performance will be better than Qualcomm, but the gap should be greatly reduced, and MediaTek is likely to continue to be a premium choice in 2022. The price/performance ratio of MediaTek Dimensity 9000 mobile phone in 2022 is very feasible/performance ratio in the market.

Manufacturing process/CPU/GPU

I have already introduced the core specifications of the chipset in my comparison post, but review them again:

MediaTek will be the only company using TSMC’s N4 manufacturing process, and TSMC has always been the best chipset manufacturer. Most likely battery and heat The throttling problem of SD888 and Exynos 2100 At least partly due to Samsung’s manufacturing process. This may give MediaTek a significant advantage.

MediaTek has confirmed the CPU frequency, they are slightly higher than the leaked Qualcomm specifications:

  • 1x Cortex-X2 @ 3.05GHz 1x1024KB pL2
  • 3x Cortex-A710 @ 2.85GHz 3x512KB pL2
  • 4x Cortex-A510 @ 1.80GHz 4x256KB pL2

MediaTek revealed some additional information about the CPU. MediaTek claims that compared with the current generation of Android flagship chips (probably SD888), the performance has increased by 35%. For me, the more important thing is the 37% increase in efficiency. Technically, this will make the peak power roughly the same as the X1, but because the chipset is faster, it can complete work faster, reducing battery usage.

Although MediaTek uses the same Cortex-A510 core as Qualcomm and Samsung, it looks like they are working their way. The Cortex-A510 designed by Arm can share the SIMD/FP pipeline and L2 cache. MediaTek designed the chipset to use its own dedicated cache like previous chipsets. It remains to be seen how different this is.

We already know the Arm Mali-G710MP10 GPU, but now confirm that it runs at 850MHz. GPU may be one of the biggest factors distinguishing chipsets this year. MediaTek is the only company that uses Arm Mali (although Tensor 2 may use it). When Samsung turns to AMD, Qualcomm will continue to use Adreno.

ISP and APU/NPU

In recent years, the company has shifted its focus from raw processing capabilities to image processing and artificial intelligence.this Google tensor It is a good example of a shift towards more focus on artificial intelligence.

The new 5th generation AI processing unit (APU) has four times the performance and power efficiency of the previous Dimensity 1200.

MediaTek showed the ETHZ Ai Benchmark showing the new chipset leads by 16% Google Pixel 6 Use its Google Tensor chipset. Google has made a big leap in AI performance, but the underlying chipset is essentially the flagship chipset in 2021, so next year’s chips will inevitably be better.

Similarly, the image signal processor (ISP) has also been significantly improved.

This is now a triple ISP that can work simultaneously, allowing throughput of up to 9 gigapixels per second. ISP claims to be the first company in the world to support 320MP, and Mediatek said they are working with suppliers to bring this feature to the market.

The camera can support concurrent operation of 32+32+32MP sensors.

MediaTek was the first to implement AV1 decoding, and now it has improved to 8K AV1 video decoding, but there is still no AV1 encoding.

The chipset can drive WQHD+ displays to 144Hz, or FHD+ to 180Hz, with full HDR+ self-adaptation (10-bit).

Connectivity

The new chipset is also the world’s first chipset with Bluetooth 5.3. It will also support Wi-Fi 6E to achieve 6GHz band support and 160MHz channel bandwidth. Qualcomm already supports Wi-Fi 6E, but few brands implement it.

modem

As you might expect, there are multiple modem upgrades, 5G spectrum up to 300MHz is aggregated on three carriers, allowing downloads up to 7Gbps

in conclusion

Mediatek Dimensity 9000 is undoubtedly an exciting chipset, and I hope we see the device launched in the UK this year a bit earlier than Dimensity 1200. OnePlus Nord 2 is one of my favorite phones this year, and it offers excellent performance at great value for money. I hope MediaTek can continue this trend.

Many of the world premiere announcements that came out yesterday were purely because MediaTek was the first to issue an announcement, so it was relatively meaningless marketing promotion.

Qualcomm will start the Snapdragon Summit on the 30thday November. At that time we will see the real situation of the game.
