Phyllis Campbell

What’s your favorite Asian food and snack?

My favorite Asian food is Tonkotsu Ramen – I often order takeout to take home with spinach and some other spices – a perfect meal!

I’m also a fan of senbei and other treats that fuel me with endless “Zoom” calls!

What entertainment do you like?

My relaxing “happy place” is Maui, where my mother and grandmother were born. My husband and I love to play golf, so Maui is the perfect place to play golf – warm and dry.

What does the AAPI legacy mean to you? How do you celebrate your legacy?

I am proud that my mother’s side (Japanese American from Hawaii) gave me the perfect combination of Aloha spirit combined with her role model as a medical professional. My father’s side (Japanese American) was detained in WWII. Although it was a horrific tragedy, they created a spirit of perseverance.

One celebration was honoring my past by going back to my roots, visiting my mother and grandparents’ columbarium on Maui and lighting a stick of incense for them.

What advice do you have for young people just starting out and wanting to be leaders?

Especially for people of color: Adventure! Don’t be afraid to take on challenges in your career, because that’s where you grow the most. get ready!

Always leave a better place (workplace, community) than the one you found. Have a contributor mindset.

Mentors and sponsors make a difference – strive to be mentored and mentor others as well.

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership is all about showing the way and giving credit to others. At the end of the day, leadership is your legacy in the success of others.
