Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the COP26 climate summit, and his office confirmed on Sunday (October 24) that this is a major push for a meeting that has been neglected by major world leaders.
More than 120 world leaders are expected to attend the largest climate summit since the 2015 Paris talks from November 1 to 2, but Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Putin will be clearly absent.
In recent weeks, climate envoys from the United States, the European Union, and the summit organizers have visited New Delhi several times to encourage the Modi government to take more measures to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Officials said that India — the greenhouse gas emitter second only to the United States and China — would make a new offer, but they did not provide any details.
Modi’s office said in a statement that after attending the G-20 summit in Rome next weekend, Modi will go to Glasgow for climate negotiations, when the temperature rise will also be a key issue.
Modi’s office stated that the climate summit will be a key opportunity to “plan the way forward.”
According to data from the International Energy Agency, India now produces the same amount of endothermic carbon dioxide as the European Union, but its per capita emissions are two-thirds lower.
According to the agency, the economic recovery after the 2021 pandemic is expected to make India’s carbon dioxide emissions higher than 2019 levels.
India insists that rich countries that have benefited from industrialization in the past should pay more to help developing countries take measures to promote climate change.
