Subaru
Today, Subaru announced new details of its first all-electric SUV. The Subaru Solterra in 2023 is called “the most technologically advanced Subaru ever” by its manufacturer.
Subaru named the model by combining two Latin words related to the outdoors, “sol” meaning sun and “terra” meaning earth.
This SUV will be based on Subaru’s e-Subaru Global Platform, which provides rear seat legroom and cargo space comparable to Subaru Forester, but with a smaller volume.
Solterra shares its foundation with Toyota bz4X. As part of the expansion of the Subaru-Toyota partnership, we jointly developed these two cars, and the partnership also produced models such as the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86.
Subaru will equip each Solterra with all-wheel drive. Each model will also receive advanced safety technology and “sufficient” ground clearance. The Subaru Forester and Outback currently provide 8.7 inches of space between the underbody and the ground.
In a press release that further described the expectations of potential buyers for this SUV, the automaker stated that the model was “built from Subaru’s DNA.” The rear end, as shown in a photo of the manufacturer’s handout, showcases C-shaped taillights and a spoiler that looks more Toyota-like than Subaru, although this Subie may set the tone for the upcoming brand design shift.
A glimpse of the cabin can be seen through Solterra’s Subaru.com login page. It shows a large, horizontally oriented infotainment touch screen. It also depicts a rotary shifter, a fully digital instrument panel, two cup holders and a storage space for small items.
Solterra will go on sale in mid-2022. More information about the model is expected to be released when it debuts in the coming months.
