New undergraduate major announced: Climate System Science

Columbia University is proud to announce its first climate science major. The Climate System Science Concentration, in partnership with the Columbia Climate Institute, launches in November 2022 in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.A central goal of the new major is to attract a large and diverse number of undergraduates to address critical needs in climate science, starting with education at Columbia University and its new major climate schoolThe students will join an inclusive program that will prepare them to be well-informed citizens and professionals in the fast-growing and diverse climate job market, from academia to Wall Street and Big Tech to the United Nations.

The Climate System Science major is designed for students interested in how the past, present and future climate system works and in creating solutions to the rapidly accelerating climate crisis. While building a fundamental scientific understanding of the climate system, climate system science students develop analytical, solutions-oriented thinking and expertise. A flexible course structure combines geology, physics, biology, chemistry, and mathematics with a core of climate system science and additional electives focused on climate solutions, justice, policy, and communication courses. Like the trajectory in sea level changes, decarbonizationand Modern Climate are related to the mission and application center of the Columbia Climate Institute.
