New York announced Monday that all public school staff, including teachers and principals, will be vaccinated as the city has stepped up its efforts to slow the spread of the highly infectious delta virus.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said that before September 27, every employee in the education department must receive at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine.
There will be no option for weekly testing.
“We know this will help ensure everyone’s safety,” he told reporters.
New York City has the largest public school system in the United States, with approximately 1.1 million students in 1,800 schools. The directive will affect nearly 150,000 employees.
So far, only 63% of educators have been vaccinated.
The announcement comes as public agencies and private companies in the United States are working to increase vaccination rates.
Many unions and critics of authorization have publicly opposed the request for vaccinations on the grounds of personal freedom.
On Monday, the US Food and Drug Administration fully approved the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid vaccine, which is expected to trigger a series of new vaccine tasks across the country.

The New York directive was issued after Los Angeles and Chicago announced their own teacher vaccine regulations.
De Blasio hopes that all students will return to the classroom when the school starts the new school year on September 13 after taking distance learning and face-to-face learning last year.
The Big Apple now requires people to take vaccination certificates in indoor venues such as restaurants, gyms, and performances, as the city tries to get back on its feet.
According to official data, in New York City, a city with a population of more than 8 million, 75.6% of adults received at least one dose of the vaccine.
